How to check the TDS level in water at Home

TDS in water stands for Total Dissolved Solids which consists of both the organic and inorganic components. It includes magnesium, potassium, and calcium. You must have heard that our body needs these substances for its proper growth and development. Then what is the requirement of checking the TDS levels of water?

The actual reason is that these substances are required to a specific amount only by our body. If these are above the desired levels, they are harmful effects of unsafe drinking water on our body. As a result, it is very extremely essential to know the TDS level of the water you are intaking every day.

The maximum TDS level which is advisable to consume is 500mg/liter and if the level extends 1000mg/liter. It is strongly recommended not to drink that water. But how will you find out whether the water you are drinking is pure and fit to consume or not? You can tell the TDS level just by looking at the water. So, here are some of the ways which you can determine the TDS level of water at your home only.

  • Digital TDS Meter

This is probably the easiest method of checking the TDS level of drinking water at home. These are digital meters available in shops and even online for a few hundred rupees. All that is needed to be done is that you simply have to remove the protective cap of the meter. Then immerse it into the water to a marked level for 10 to 15 seconds. This meter is having a scale from 0 to 5000 ppm and the level is then displayed on that scale. This is how you will come to know if the water is fit or not.

  • Filter Paper and a Weighing Scale

This is more of a conventional method to measure the TDS level of water at home. It doesn’t require any electrical equipment but a few other components like a clean and a sterilized glass beaker. Also a sterile stirring stick, filter paper, evaporating dish, a pipette large enough to collect 50 ml water and a weighing scale.

  • First of all, weigh the empty evaporating dish. Stir the water sample vigorously so that the particulate matter mixes evenly and collect it in the pipette doing the same.
  • Pour the water through the filter paper into another beaker and repeat this process 3 times so that all the particulate matter deposits in the filter paper.
  • You need to transfer this filtrate into the evaporating dish and let it dry completely after which you weigh it in mg.
  • Now you need to subtract the weight of the empty dish from the weight taken which will give the value of TDS level in mg/liter.

  • Electrical Conductivity Method

Using the electrical conductivity meter is also one of the ways by which you can get to know the TDS level of drinking water at your home. Here you need to take the water in a beaker and make its temperature 250C. Then insert the lead of the meter into the water. It will give the readings after a few seconds in micro Simens which determines the purity of water.

Therefore, these are some of the methods you can use to keep a check on the TDS levels of your drinking water and keep yourself safe and healthy. Our RO Service in NOIDA leaves no stone unturned.
